Yahoo Turns to Search Engine Giant, Google, for Help


After reporting financial losses for the third quarter, Yahoo recently announced that it would begin to use Google to help boost some of its search results and advertising. According to Yahoo’s chief executive, Marissa Mayer, the tech company is still in search (no pun intended) of a viable turnaround plan. According to Mayer []:

Our Q3 results were largely within our forecasted expectations — our GAAP revenue grew 7% year-over-year and our Mavens revenue grew 43%.  As we move into 2016, we will work to narrow our strategy, focusing on fewer products with higher quality to achieve improved growth and profitability. In addition to sharpening focus within core business growth, our top priority is the planned spinoff of Aabaco Holdings. This is an important moment for the Company, and we continue to strive to complete the spin as quickly as we can.

Narrowing Their Focus

Part of Yahoo’s said turnaround plan involves narrowing their strategy, and the first area to feel the effects was Yahoo’s video programming, which is taking a $42 million write-off. You can also likely expect some lay-offs, and scaling back in other areas of the company’s operations.

Making a Deal with Google

Earlier this week, Yahoo signed a mobile search and web deal with Google. The 3-year deal allows Google to supply advertising and search results for some of the search queries made by Yahoo users. And according to Yahoo, this partnership will only serve to bolster their search capabilities as well as complement the search services already provided by Microsoft.

There will also, likely, be a shift towards mobile search initiatives. According to the Yahoo Q3 investor report [], mobile revenue represented 24 percent of traffic-driven revenue, a 4% increase from 2014. As more companies and brands shift the focus to mobile search from desktop search, Mayer reiterated the point that 90 percent of time on phones are spent in mobile apps, not in the browser. Therefore, audiences may see more online experiences driven by mobile apps.

Turning towards Google for help with search results and advertising is a bandaid that may make investors happy for the moment. However, Mayer’s plan to streamline and focus the company remains to be seen.

He/she will be able to guide you in capturing the look and feel for the video.

#2 – Become an expert in your industry.

This is sometimes easier said than done. Becoming an expert means investing in time – time to hire the right staff people, time that will be spent reading and performing market research, and time actually doing marketing to figure out what works and what doesn’t. In the end, however, it’s worth it.

#3 – Segment your audience to target your content accordingly.

By segmenting your audience, you will be able to more effectively write and deliver online marketing content that appeals to specific people.

#4 – Keep an eye on global trends.

Believe it or not, global events affect your business as well as your clients’ businesses. Knowing what is going on, and what is happening in the world can help you be proactive in your marketing approach.

#5 – Write original content.

Most clients and work associates will understand this.

While most people and businesses can benefit from social media, not all social media is created equal, and not all customers/clients use social media in the same way. Marketers sometimes make the mistake of thinking that they need to join every and all social media channels. However, this is further from the truth. In fact, many marketers wind up spreading themselves too thin because they are managing too many social media platforms. Do the research ahead of time to figure out where your target audience spends the majority of their social media hours, and create accounts only for the top 2 or 3 social media platforms. It will be easier to manage/track.

#16 – Create an email marketing campaign.

E-mail marketing campaigns are a great way to stay relevant with present, past, and future customers. However, you should take care to only create email marketing campaigns that truly offer something of value. Otherwise, you may be seen as a spammer. Plan ahead to determine how often you market newsletters and other information and to whom. You may have to tailor your messages accordingly.

Networking events are are great way to rub elbows with people within your industry. It is also a great way to pick up on what other people are doing within your industry, and it is also a great opportunity to learn something new (as many networking events feature panel speakers). Images are what draw readers into reading and digesting your awesome content, so choose your images wisely. Pay attention to things such as:

  • Image source (original image vs. uploaded from another website)
  • Formatting (ex: right, left, or center justified)

  • Alt Tags
  • Image attribution (always attribute the image to the original photographer – even if it was you!)

#28 – Interview an influencer and feature it on the company blog/website.

Interviews make great fodder for blogs and websites. Interviewing an influencer in your industry is a great way to start or continue a dialogue about a particular topic that may be of interest to your audience. It is also a great way to spark interest among readers who will then share that story among their peers, thus lending more credibility to your business.

Rise of Ad Tech, Social Media Gives Businesses More Control

According to the latest forecasts out from ZenithOptimedia, Global ad spend is on track to grow 5.5% this year to $537 billion, while Internet advertising will account for nearly one-quarter of that, at $121 billion.

If there was ever any doubt as to where people are spending most of their time these days, this latest information will certainly put out that fire. In fact, Zenith goes on to predict that Internet display will almost certainly take over paid search at $74.4 billion versus $71.1 billion by 2015. This could spell trouble for companies like Google, who have traditionally dominated the Internet ad space in the past.

Keeping an Eye on Mobile Ad Spend

As Ingrid Lunden over at TechCrunch recaps, all eyes are now turning to mobile as mobile continues to experience rapid growth. This makes sense as more people are using mobile devices to access information on the Internet, from tablets to smartphones to other types of portable devices. Compare the following as case and point:

In 2013, $13.4 billion was spent on mobile ads, but by 2016 that will rise to $45 billion, or 28% of Internet ad spend and 7.6% of total ad investments.

Researchers at Zenith stated,

“Mobile will leapfrog radio, magazines and outdoor to become the world’s fourth-largest medium by the end of our forecast period..”

The Rise of Social Media Advertising

Even more impressive is the rise of social media advertising, which is currently growing at 29% each year.

Why is this?

As mentioned earlier, social media is HUGE. If you don’t have at least a Twitter account and a Facebook account, then you simply don’t get it. Consider the social media giant, Facebook, which currently has more than 1 billion users and is on pace to soon cross the 1 billion mark on just mobile alone! The advertising potential is limitless.

2- Rise of Ad Tech

Perhaps even more poignant is the rise of Ad Tech. Why? Ad Tech allows businesses to gain more control over what they buy and where it’s being seen. “It also provides a greater amount of data to be able to measure the impact that their marketing investments are having.”
